The 1969 Gibson SG Standard is an iconic and highly regarded model, made in Kalamazoo, Michigan. This example features the classic cherry lacquer finish, mahogany body, and neck, coupled with a rosewood fingerboard, making it a stunning and timeless piece. The SG Standard from this era is especially renowned for its association with legendary guitarist Angus Young of AC/DC, who has made it a signature part of his musical legacy.
This particular model showcases the distinctive features of the late-60s SG, including a large, shaped plastic pickguard that covers more of the face of the guitar, with the humbucking pickups mounted to it. It also has chrome hardware, including the long-plate Maestro Vibrola vibrato tailpiece, and the "Witch Hat" style knobs, which were common in this period. The tuners are original Kluson Deluxe, branded with the "Gibson" logo and featuring double-ring buttons.
The mahogany body has slightly less sculpting compared to earlier SG models, but its structural advantage is evident in the stronger neck joint with a long, rounded heel. This design reduces the common neck breakage issues associated with earlier '60s SGs, making this model more durable and reliable. The neck features a slim, round-back profile with a nut width of 1 9/16" and offers a solid, comfortable feel.
The SG Standard of this period has always been a favorite due to its powerful tone and versatile playability. The 1969 model, in particular, was produced in high numbers, making it one of the more iconic years for this style. It's a guitar designed for high-energy rock, with two powerful patent # humbuckers that deliver a thick, punchy tone, perfect for heavy riffs and Angus-style solos.
This 1969 SG Standard remains in excellent, all-original condition. The finish shows small dings, scratches, and scuffs, mostly around the edges of the body and headstock, while the chrome hardware remains very clean. It also comes complete with its original Ess and Ess faux alligator case, which, though worn on the bottom, remains fully functional and offers the same classic vibe as the guitar itself.
The 1969 Gibson SG Standard is a remarkable, vintage instrument with a timeless appeal, ideal for collectors, rock players, and anyone seeking the authentic SG experience with an undeniable rock ‘n roll pedigree.
